The Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI) held a Challenge Workshop on the subject of future space instrumentation for Operational EO Missions on Friday 13th November 2009. Presentations from the Workshop are now available.
Place: Ashorne Hill Management College, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, CV33 9QW (www.ashornehill.co.uk).
Operational space missions must deliver data for continuing EO or meteorological applications, including commercial services. They are expected to operate reliably over a relatively long time period and typically consist of a series of identical spacecraft, launched at intervals over a number years or decades to provide continuity of data. They therefore present different technology and science challenges, including provision of data with long term repeatable quality, reliability of operation and small quantity satellite and instrument production. The aim of this meeting is to investigate potential opportunities and map the capability of UK academia and industry in operational Earth observation missions and instrumentation.
Presentations: Operational Meteorology – user requirements (Roger Saunders, Met Office) Sentinel 5 and Post EPS (Brian Kerridge, RAL) Technology experiences for operational missions (Mike Cutter, SSTL) Technological challenges for the next generation of passive microwave instruments (Janet Charlton, Sula Systems) Building multiple MHS instruments -the challenges (Ian Stewart, Astrium)
