Polar EO Workshop

A Workshop was held on the 4th November in Harwell to investigate UK needs and capabilities in Polar observations from space, in collaboration with Airbus DS and British Antarctic Survey.

CEOI/NCEO Copernicus Workshop

The NCEO and CEOI held a joint meeting in June 2016 to consider the future evolution of the Copernicus Space Segment with a number of speakers from science and industry. The meeting took place on 29th June 2016 during the NCEO 2016 Science Conference, held at the University of Warwick Conference Centre.


Advanced Manufacturing Challenge Workshop

The CEOI-ST, in collaboration with the Satellite Applications Catapult, held a 1-day Challenge Workshop on “Advanced Manufacturing Techniques for Earth Observation and Space Technology” at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, on 11th February 2016. The meeting explored recent developments in advanced manufacturing, and how these techniques apply to Earth observation instrumentation and space technology in general.  The full agenda is available here. Airborne Demonstrator Opportunities

The CEOI-ST held a 1-day Challenge Workshop on "Airborne Demonstrator Opportunities", at the Astronomy Technology Centre at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, on 7th October 2015. The meeting explored current platforms and opportunities, and current users shared their experience of flying a variety of payloads.

Challenge Workshop on Future Science for EO - Needs and Missions


CEOI-ST held a challenge workshop to look at Future Science for EO - Needs and Missions on the 31st March 2015 at College Court, in Leicester.

The workshop looked at future science needs for Earth Observation, the technology needs for ESA Earth Explorer 9 and other Science-driven Missions and developed an understanding of how CEOI-ST can further support science-driven EO missions.

The workshop was free to attend and aimed at all scientists and industrialists interested in future science EO missions and their drivers. There were open sessions for people to present new ideas and science as part of the workshop.

CEOI Technology Conference 2015

The CEOI-ST held a 2-day Technology Conference at Cosener¹s House in Abingdon on 21st and 22nd April 2015. This conference brought together personnel from recent CEOI projects to showcase and discuss their work and its context of science needs, commercial needs and mission opportunities.  Presentations from the Conference are available for download.

Affordable Space

The CEOI-ST held a Challenge Workshop on “Affordable Space” on Thursday 16th October in Bristol.  The workshop explored the technology needs and cost drivers for EO missions in the context of recognising the range of ESA and national missions that can be enabled by reducing cost.

CEOI Technology Strategy Workshop

This round-table workshop was held in central London on Wednesday 10th July 2013 at Regents College. Its input was the technology roadmaps and the indicative missions discussed at a recent CEOI Future Missions Challenge Workshop. The workshop considered how CEOI projects can move to exploitation, and the options and priorities for investment of the £2-3m funding likely to be available to the CEOI programme over the next 2-3 years.


Arctic Polar Region Challenge Workshop

The CEOI Workshop on ‘Challenges for Exploitation of the Arctic Polar Region’ was held on 25th June 2013 at the Satellite Applications Catapult in Harwell. The workshop considered the opportunities and challenges, together with the implications for future space missions of this important potential market area.

Future Missions Challenge Workshop 2013

Future Platforms for Earth Observation

The CEOI held a Challenge workshop to explore the potential of a range of future platforms for Earth observation on February 28th 2013 at the University of Leicester to work with the community to identify future platform needs and utility. The workshop considered EO and remote sensing from balloons, high altitude platforms, airborne demonstrators, sounding rockets, techdemo-SAT/CAT-SAT type platforms and the international space station. Active participation from the community was encouraged in order to provide future direction.

Challenge Workshop - Current and Future Challenges in Calibration of EO Instrumentation

The CEOI Challenge Workshop investigated the calibration challenges for the major sensor types and the new opportunities, techniques and facilities for calibration and validation of measurements. It was held on 20th November 2012 at STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell.

The Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI) held the Challenge Workshop – Challenges for EO Instrumentation for UAVs & CubeSats on Tuesday 10th July 2012 at the University of Nottingham. This event is held in association with the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc)

Two new CEOI Challenge Workshops have been announced.

Challenges for EO Instrumentation for UAVs and CubeSats - to be held on Tuesday 10th July 2012, at the University of Nottingham.

Challenges in Calibration of EO Instrumentation - to be held on Tuesday 20th November 2012, at Harwell, Oxfordshire.
